Create a Versatile Kitchen Rack From an IKEA Pegboard

While redecorating my apartment last summer, I challenged myself to find creative storage solutions without spending a ton of cash. One of my favorite kitchen projects was turning a simple IKEA peg board into a super versatile hanging rack for pots and pans.

Step 1: Make an IKEA Run

First, you'll need to purchase the SKÅDIS pegboard from IKEA. It’s only $59.99, and installation is super easy.

Step 2: Plan Out Your Space

Before you begin, consider what you want to hang on the pegboard. I use mine as a heavy-duty pot rack, but you can also use it to store utensils, hang measuring cups, or even display an herb garden Understanding what you want to organize will help you determine how to best configure your pegboard.

Step 3: Assemble and Mount the Pegboard

Follow IKEA's instructions to assemble the pegboard. It's a simple process: You'll need to secure the pegboard to the wall with the mounting hardware provided. Make sure you find the studs in your wall to ensure a sturdy setup, especially if you plan to hang heavier items. I honestly thought this process would be harder than it was.

Step 4: Customize with Accessories

IKEA offers a range of SKÅDIS accessories, from hooks to shelves and clips. Here are some creative ways to use these accessories to maximize your kitchen rack's efficiency:

  • Hooks: Perfect for hanging utensils, measuring cups, oven mitts, or a colander.

  • Containers: Use these for storing pens, scissors, and other small tools you might need in the kitchen.

  • Shelves: A great spot for your cookbooks, spices, or a potted plant to bring in some greenery.

  • Clips: Keep your shopping lists, recipes, or photos on display for easy access and a personal touch.

Step 5: Organize Your Kitchen Rack

Once your pegboard is up and you have your accessories, it's time to arrange your items. Place the things you use most frequently at arm's reach and group similar items together to create a sense of order. The beauty of the SKÅDIS system is that you can rearrange the components as needed, making it a dynamic storage solution that can evolve with your kitchen.

Step 6: Add a Personal Touch

The pegboard doesn't just have to be functional; it can also be a statement piece. Consider painting the frame to match your kitchen decor or adding some decorative elements like string lights for a cozy ambiance. If you're into the rustic look, you could even frame the pegboard with reclaimed wood for an extra layer of style.
